I produce transformational learning experiences. I've developed training and instructional materials for higher education, corporate, K-12, and government learners. Since participating in EdCampWestTexas in September 2013 my craft has been greatly influenced by the teachers, librarians, and administrators I meet. I love learning, trying out new stuff, and sharing what happens via social media. And I'm a parent whose three daughters who went to public K-12.
What does your ideal school or classroom like?
Have you seen examples of Erin Klein's classrooms? They look nothing like the spaces I learned in growing up. My ideal classroom would look like the spaces its learners would be comfortable making in: craft shops and workshops. They'd have fast Wi-Fi, iPads, and Chromebooks. Sites like YouTube, twitter, and Facebook wouldn't be blocked. Parents and peers (of adult learners) would be able to meet in rooms where any surface (walls, floors) was writeable. Oh, and lots of light sources and windows to let the world in.
If you were to lead a session at Edcamp USDOED, what would it be about?
My session would be about EdCampMOBY (My Own Back Yard) where educators from K-12 would get together with corporate educators (instructional designers like me). We share a lot of the same constraints of time and budget. We have access to similar tools. Strategies are where there is tremendous opportunity for sharing. Like a lot of people I believe mobile devices like iPads were suitable mainly for media consumption. The people I meet at EdCamps have shown me you can do a LOT for a LITTLE. All you need is motivation, creativity, and a love for the learners you support.
Oh, and parents would be welcome. I attended most of the curriculum nights my kids' schools had. I didn't really get the teaching and learning strategies and modalities that were available to my kids until I began going to EdCamp and COMPILE events. So there'd be something for parents to do too.
At the end of the day everyone would have had the opportunity to make something tangible to take home and share.
Have you ever attended an Edcamp?
