I currently serve as a Supervisor of Elementary Education with the Edison Township Public Schools in New Jersey. As such, I oversee our K-5 Science and Gifted & Talented programs. In addition to the work in my district, I also serve on Remind's Teacher Advisory Board, was a co-author of StuVoice.org's Student Voice In A Box, and am a member of the steering committee for the NJ/PA Elevating and Celebrating Effective Teaching and Teachers (ECET2) conference.
What does your idea school or classroom look like?
My ideal classroom isn't bound by conventional curricular norms. Students are engaged in passion-based learning tailored to interest. A 1:1 exists as a means of connecting students to information and a global audience. Students collaborate with peers across the hall, the state, and the ocean regularly to explore skills, ideas, and inquiries experientially. Our learning environment is bright and inviting. Student work adorns the wall and bulletin boards have been replaced by televisions that shuffle through artifacts documenting the learning process. This feed is connected to our classroom blog/website so we can share our discoveries with parents, families, and stakeholders. Children ask questions and have an authentic voice not only in lesson design and delivery, but also in the governance of the room. The classroom is our learning space - a place where reciprocally both the students and I grow together.
