How are you involved in education?
I am currently a Middle School educator at an independent school. I've had roles from teaching English to technology. Next year, I'll be Middle School Dean of Students and MS Drama Coordinator. I am also very involved in area edcamps and unconference-style professional development.
What's your ideal school or classroom like?
Flexibility is the name of the game at my ideal school. My ideal school would allow teachers the flexibility to teach a variety of content and grade-levels, space usage would be open to need. There would be a variety of spaces up for use, and teachers could move about the spaces freely depending on what they need for their work. Hopefully, lots of the work would take place beyond the school walls. Leaders would be guides allowing this flexibility to occur and working with teachers to be life long learners.
If you were to lead a session at Edcamp USDOE, what would it be about?
I would love to see a session in what schools are doing by way of meeting students social emotion/non-cognitive needs (how much of it is in the classroom), ways of inherently meeting student needs without perhaps the guide of "character education"
I would also love to see a session on true STEAM-- not just with the addition of arts, but how the arts can truly intersect with the other components.
