How are you involved in education?
I have taught middle school in the Bay Area for over 15 years. I am currently finishing my research for an M.S. in Educational Administration and I LOVE incorporating technology into my Language Arts curriculum. Over the past year, I participated in MERIT (Making Education Relevant through Technology) through the Krause Center for Innovation at Foothill College. This has helped me to become the teacher I have always wanted to be. We were given resources, support, and intense training in educational pedagogy and integration of technology to assist collaboration, critical thinking and communication in the classroom. MERIT is an educational model that should be looked at by anyone interested in transforming education.
What's your ideal school or classroom like?
My ideal classroom includes a reading lounge complete with beanbag chairs, a colorful carpet, areas for literature discussion and independent reading, as well as a book shelf supplied with high interest multi-genre books for varied reading levels and interests.
The main classroom includes whiteboard tables with a cut out in the center to hold whiteboard pens and an eraser. The white boards are used regularly for student collaboration and problem solving. Tables have a variety of plant life that students care for throughout the week. Each classroom is equipped with a set of Chromebooks. Of course, the classroom would have to adequate lighting or even better...lots of sunlight.
If you were to lead a session at Edcamp USDOE, what would it be about?
