How are you involved in education?
I currently teach second grade. I also blog at Kleinspiration.com and work with the Scholastic Top Teaching team in NY.
What's your ideal school or classroom like?
My ideal classroom is one where the student's voice shines. Nothing matters more than the children having fun, feeling comfortable, and being inspired to learn. When we love what we do, it is not considered work. Students should love coming to school each day. Are we developing environments where this is happening?
At the elementary level, classrooms should be de-cluttered. Resources around the room should be at the child's eye level. Colors should be neutral - not distracting. Natural elements should be brought into the space: plants, class pets, sunlight. Supplies should be shared and accessible. Furniture should be comfortable. Fluorescent lighting should be eliminated. Incandescent and natural light should be used. Walls should be flexible so classrooms could reconfigure and collaborate with ease. Each year, the space should change a bit to reflect the new group of students who would use it.
If you were to lead a session at Edcamp USDOE, what would it be about?
