How are you involved in education?
I am principal at an elementary school that serves 1,120 students who are in grades CD-5th. Technology is integrated into the daily routine for all to include our youngest learners in CD who are 4 years old. I am blessed to work with a creative and high energy staff who use a variety of technology to structure the learning for all. While we are not 1:1 we do have 5-6 iPads in classrooms along with 4-6 computers, Smartboards with wireless headsets, and some super creative teachers.
What's your ideal school or classroom like?An ideal school is one that is designed for the needs of the students who will inhabit it. It is aesthetically pleasing….desks and chairs are the correct height for the learners and learning spaces are clean and clutter free. The learning spaces are creatively designed and convey a sense of ownership that they BELONG to the children who inhabit them. Their work is displayed throughout the classrooms and throughout the building to include artwork and other student created pieces. Technology is naturally integrated and does not need to be announced. Students and staff use devices with which they are most comfortable to manage their learning and to deliver instruction. Technology is readily available and is used to assist in differentiating but does not take the place of highly trained teachers. Project Based Learning and Personalized Learning experiences are a natural part of the learning process. Students create content based on their interests using rubrics. Students are engaged and excited to be a part of something special. The students are developed as leaders and learners and have multiple opportunities to learn, to lead, and to grow.
